Don't forget the "business" in Business Intelligence

We are currently involved on a number of "BI" initiatives and are noticing a recurring them - many implementations of BI software are not as successful as expected because of low adoption rates.  One common reason for low adoption rates is failure to adequately anticipate how the new BI technology will be used by the business.  If it is not clear how the technology will fit into the existing business processes or how processes will change, then people will be confused and not leverage new capability to its fullest extent.

We always carve out time with our clients to evaluate (and document) current-state and future-state business processes that are in scope of the initiative.  The discovery meetings are always valuable, since many procedures are not documented adequately (if at all!).  Large gaps in current-state and future-state uncover additional requirements.  The result of this effort is a more complete picture of what the future state will look like.  Business users are more informed of the up-coming changes and understand how their daily activities will change.  Combined with training and communication, adoption rates can be increased, allowing companies to realize the many benefits on BI investments.

So, if you are in the midst of a BI implementation or are getting ready for one, don't forget to involve the business!
